Bionic Eye to Undergo Clinical Tests In 2013

Is it possible to cure blindness?

Scientists at the Monash University have developed bionic eye that can restore vision of hundreds of people across the globe.

The retinal implant trial on human beings will undergo by the next year.

What is a bionic eye?

A bionic eye is actually a photocell that uses space technology and aims at not only partially restoring the lost vision but also magnifying it.

This device will help those blind people who have undergone traumatic surgeries or have had tumours.Ultimately a bionic eye will help in glaucoma and other retinal ailments.

The eye disorders destroy the photoreceptors of the eyes. Photoreceptors are the cells present behind the retina that are concerned with light perception and pass them on to the brain. The brain interprets the light patterns as images.

Arthur Lowery, the director of the Monash University`s Monash Vision Group (MVG) mentioned, “We have made significant progress since beginning last year and are confident that we will have a device to treat the majority of patients who are clinically blind,”

Working Of Bionic Eye:

The experts claim that the bionic eye will stimulate the brain’s vision area in a way identical to that of the normal optic pathway.

The implant will send signals from the camera to the electronic nit inserted in the superficial layers of the brain at the back of the head.

Arthur Lowery said, “Our device will directly stimulate the brain’s vision centre using a miniaturized implant. The implant is fed with signals from a camera that has been processed to extract the most useful information, depending on what the user needs.”

He further explained, “The implant has many tiles, each with 45 electrodes, designed to give over 650 pixels in all. Due to the powerful and adaptable signal processing, we believe this number of electrodes can provide invaluable situational awareness to the user. The device can also be tuned for use in different environments, both indoors and outdoors.”

He said that unlike other bionic eye, the MVG device does not require a functioning optic nerve or eyeball or visual pathway from the eye to the brain.
