A new research has discarded the earlier findings of autism being linked to late maternity. The new study shows that older parents have 27 percent more chances of autism in their children.

There is a greater threat of autism if parents are between 35 to 39 years of age at the time of conception.

The research marked that if both the parents are under this mentioned age group, the risk is not further increased.

The study says that if the father is below 35 years while the mother is 40 or above the risk of autism is increased by 65 percent. By swapping the age between the two parents, the risk is decreased to 44 percent.

The Study:

Expert researchers from Denmark and Cambridge are working on the study that deals with autism being a rising concern in present times.

In Denmark, 1.3 million children born around 1980 to 2003 were listed in the study. The published results of the research were based on 9,556 autistic spectrum cases from 1.3 million children.

Child disorders like Autism, Asperger’s syndrome and other growth disorders were diagnosed in all 9,556 children.

The entire study can be verified in the journal of Annals of Epidemiology.

The Study is not Exhaustive:

Professor Erik Thorlund Parne of Denmark said, “The (old) explanation was that new mutations in the sperm increases the risk for autism, and that new mutations in the egg increases the risk for autism.

One would then expect that if a couple had these particular mutations in both the sperm and the egg, then they would have a higher risk for autism than if only one parent had the particular mutation. We don’t see this pattern.”

Hence it establishes the fact that age alone is not the only factor responsible for autism.

Various environmental factors like infection, fertility cure and other medications have unfavorable effects that cannot be ruled out.  Therefore the experts confirmed that a comprehensive research should be conducted.

The research recommends older parents to seek medical assistance if their child shows any delay in developmental symptoms.
